The annual Life Skills Prom, an event that brings together students from various schools in the region, is more than just a dance party. It's a celebration of practical skills and community engagement, offering a safe and cheerful environment for students to interact and learn. This year's prom, hosted by Burrell High School, showcased a luau-themed setting at Hill Crest Country Club, Lower Burrell, with a focus on fostering connections and providing a platform for students to showcase their talents. The event was a resounding success, attracting approximately 175 guests, including life skills students, general education students, and teachers from Burrell, New Kensington-Arnold, Riverview, Kiski Area, Deer Lakes, Franklin Regional, Freeport Area, Plum, and Sunrise School in Monroeville. The planning and organization were commendable, with Burrell taking the reins from the New Kensington-Arnold School District, which had hosted the event in previous years. Sara Schwartz, a speech language pathologist at Burrell High School, emphasized the importance of continuing this tradition, highlighting the special bond it creates among students. This year, organizers introduced new activities, such as arts and crafts and a 360-degree photo booth, to enhance student socialization and engagement. The prom featured a magician who involved student volunteers, adding a touch of magic to the evening. Students from diverse backgrounds participated, with Burrell life skills student Aaliyah Barker expressing her excitement about the crafts and meeting new friends. The event promoted inclusivity with no dress code, allowing students to express themselves comfortably. Mackenzie Lescinsky, another life skills student from Franklin Regional, showcased her style with a blue floral dress and glitter eye shadow, eagerly anticipating the dance and a potential balloon cat from the balloon animal station. The funding for the prom came from a combination of community sponsors and school-based fundraising efforts. At Burrell, general education students raised funds through a coffee cart and a creative 'Flamingo Flock' fundraiser, filling classrooms with colorful flamingo figurines. Chloe Martin, a general education student and part of the Bucco Buddies organization, enjoyed the fundraiser and appreciated the sense of community it fostered. The prom served as a valuable opportunity for life skills students to connect with their peers and general education students, creating a supportive environment. Life skills teacher Chelsey Kriley emphasized the importance of these interactions, as it provides students with a sense of belonging and community. The Life Skills Prom is a testament to the power of community engagement and the positive impact it can have on students' lives, offering a memorable experience that goes beyond the dance floor.
